This was the original call-for-help email that we received from the shelter on Dec. 19th, 2006:
“This puppy was found abandoned. He has a severe case of sarcoptic mange. A skin scrape was done by the vet and confirmed that he is positive for sarcoptic mange. This is the contagious form of mange.
He has started treatment but will need more medical care beyond what the shelter can afford. He will need to be kept away from other dogs/people for about 10 days or until he is no longer contagious.
He has lost most of the hair on his belly and inner legs. We are not sure what breed he is, but he does have long soft hair in places! We are seeking a motivated rescue who would be willing to help him get better and find a new home.”
Mary (the founder of A Better Place) stepped in to help the pup, she named him Sebastian, and he is now being fostered at home with Mary.

Update from Mary, Jan. 3rd, 2007:
“The good news is we still can't find any mange. The shelter vet also didn't find any but had to assume from the condition of the skin that mange was the best option. They got him started on the way to health and headed him this way. Thank goodness for the caring people at Arenac AGAIN.
I don't think we realized how close to death he was. His malnutrition was so severe that the bones in his legs were starting to bend and as he put on weight here, first the right one and then the left broke.
He is on large breed puppy food, vitamin D and Calcium and we are buying him some time. I hope to gain strength in his bones. I have never seen malnutrition this bad this side of death. We will be changing casts weekly and continuing vitamins, etc. for at leat 6 weeks. I am also doing a kind of physical therapy and rigging up a pouch to carry him around in. He is happy, playful and in no pain.”

Update from Mary, Jan. 19th, 2007:
“Sebastian's legs are strengthening! Overall health is improved. Still a little anemic but happy, happy, happy. Very lovey, sweet and smart. Plays with all the big dogs, and really likes cats. The bones in the legs are doing great. The ankle areas are still very weak and now we are concentrating on them. Building up muscle strength. Just got him home tonight and Dr. Singh says he is 80% better than the week before Christmas. His weight was just under six lbs. then, at weigh-in tonight he was almost 13 lbs. Will probably be a medium- sized dog with fuzzy, longer white hair. Looking more and more like a Bully Breed mix all the time. Skin is all healed.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Today, Sebastian continues his remarkable recovery from the malnutrition and neglect that almost took his life.
He now has both casts off, and the vet is very impressed with how well his legs strenthened and straightened out! Sebastian will not be available for adoption for at least 1 month, so I'm afraid we cannot accept any applications for him until he is completely healthy. However, donations are being accepted to help with the vet bills for this precious little boy.

The ABP (A Better Place) Pet Education Center is under way! We are currently building an educational center for working with the community. The Center will focus on responsible ways of living with companion animals, by providing educational materials, mini-seminars, presentations, and training.
We are currently in need of the following items for the Pet Education Center (used or new):

Thank you for supporting our pet adoption and education programs!
Sincerely,
Mary and Diana

His severe malnutrition caused the bones in his legs to bend and break, due to a disease called Rickets. Click here to make a donation towards Sebastian's vet bills.

A dream soon to be realized. The Center will be a wonderful addition to our Pet Education Program, which includes our Pet Education Table that we currently bring to adoption events throughout the year.
